Morning Class Series in the Axis Syllabus

BANNER IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Galiya Tzur leaps into the air with one leg extended behind her and her arms outstretched. The picture is black and white. She is in an airy dance studio with lots of light. Her shoulder-length curly air flies into the air as she jumps.

The Axis Syllabus is a compendium of information relevant to the training, preparation, and performance of the moving human body. The Axis Syllabus refers to physics, anatomy, and relevant scientific data on flexibility, strength, alignment, and injuries. Teachers of the Axis Syllabus use these references to inform movement choices and to explore the what, where, and, how of efficiency and safe risk-taking.  Common-sense applications of principles are explored that apply to every-life activities as well as specific practices such as climbing, horseback riding, construction work, sports, dance, running, etc. Those that want to be involved in the Axis Syllabus form an international community through the ASRM (The Axis Syllabus Research Meshwork) a dynamic and interactive forum of teachers, researchers, and students.

We all are pushing the same earth, growing and living from it, negotiating with gravity, that pulls us towards it, considering our terms to surrender and fall. Sometimes we choose to resist and push against it into a step forward, into a jump, or into a dance. In this 5-day Axis Syllabus workshop intensive I’m interested in looking for ways to use the presence of the group around us as a moving-surrounding ground, the soil we can be nourished from, grow through, and around.  Our physical anatomy will be an inspiration source, a compass to point out the way if we’ll get lost. Hopefully, we will. What to expect? Solo and partnering work, some joint alignment research, hands-on guided exploration, set material in floor phrases, jumps, stamina challenges, and joyful togetherness. Any adaptions during the work to suit your body is appreciated and welcome.

LEVEL: No experience with the Axis Syllabus is needed but you need to be experienced in moving your body.  Examples of types of experience are any type of dance training, ecstatic dance, social dance or dance improvisation practices, martial arts, circus, sport, fitness training, etc.

ACCESS: Dancers with disabilities are welcome. Please contact us and let us know what accessibility accommodations you may need or with questions about access.
